The 43rd edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) opened its doors in dazzling fashion, inviting young minds into a world of wonder through the immersive narrative show, “Dreams of Morocco.” This captivating performance, part of Morocco’s Guest of Honour programme, brought together comedy, engaging characters, and immersive storytelling to entertain and inspire the children in attendance. Organised by the Sharjah Book Authority, the SIBF has gained a reputation as the largest book fair in the world, and the opening day did not disappoint.
Led by Ilyas Amel, an educator and performer representing Morocco’s Ministry of Culture, “Dreams of Morocco” offered a vivid experience of Morocco’s rich cultural heritage. Dressed in colourful traditional garments, Amel brought each story to life, mesmerising children with his animated expressions and passion for storytelling. His presence on stage was filled with an infectious energy, and the laughter and curiosity from his young audience showed the power of stories to bridge cultures and ignite imaginations.
The performative reading session featured three tales that delighted young listeners, and encouraged them to explore themes of bravery, curiosity, and the power of imagination.
The Kid and the Flying Camel introduced a young protagonist who befriends a magical, winged camel, taking children on an aerial journey across Morocco’s landscapes, from bustling markets to serene dunes. The story celebrated adventure and the power of unexpected friendships.
In Lion of Atlas and the Rabbit, a timid rabbit, faced with danger, is heroically saved by the mighty Lion of Atlas. This tale underscored themes of courage and the responsibility of the strong to protect the vulnerable, holding the audience spellbound.
Finally, The Flower of the Moroccan Sahara followed Layla, a curious and determined girl on a quest to find a mythical flower in the desert. Through challenges and a wise fox’s guidance, Layla’s journey illustrated resilience and the pursuit of wisdom, inspiring children to embrace learning and perseverance.
“Dreams of Morocco”, through its blend of humour, colourful storytelling, and cultural richness transported the young audience into a different world. Ilyas Amel’s engaging performance was a perfect reflection of what the Sharjah International Book Fair stands for; the power of stories to bring people together, nurture empathy, and inspire future generations.
